Cover Letter
From copying old Disney VHS covers, to drawing cartoons of my teachers on my school planner, the need to draw never left me.
Despite my passion for drawing I’ve never been a fan of comic books,
what always got my attention were animated cartoons,
I was mesmerized by these moving pictures and I kept wondering how could they have been made?
I would not believe they were made by hand, one frame after the other,
there must have been some sort of trick behind them!
Growing up these interests for drawing and animation were put aside a little
leaving room for Math, Philosophy, Physics (just to list a few) and an High School Diploma
that left me lost, rather than found, in a world were Law and Medicine
seemed to be the only two options to not let anybody in my family down, but
I couldn't make up my mind, despite knowing that I simply wanted to draw.
So I chose neither and I spent a year working in a Panini Shop, making panini,
and it was fine, until it wasn't.
One year later, after making god knows how many paninis, it was time to follow my gut and start my journey as an Animation student at NEMO Academy of Digital Arts,
maybe this was gonna be the world where I belonged.
I quickly realized though, that attending NEMO without an art background was going to be tough,
'cause I wasn’t good enough:
my drawings were off, my 'CleanUps' were trembling and remind me again what exactly is 'Timing'?
I was not gonna let that hold me back, If my drawing skills weren’t as good as the rest,
I would have found another way to prove I belonged. I began putting more thought into the idea behind my work, I wouldn’t just repeat the exercises I was given, they needed to be put in context, they had to have a story, even if it was just a simple gag.
That’s the reason why I became interested in StoryBoarding, because it’s not simply how good you trace a line, but what that line is able to communicate, what story there is behind that line.
Today drawing remains the only constant thing in my life,
Today drawing remains the only constant thing in my life,
a true passion I can’t wait to turn into a full time profession.
Sincerely,
Gabriele Della Rosa
